Panthera tigris amoyensis

This scientific illustration describes one of the most endangered species of tigers in the world. Not including the Indian subcontinent, the South China Tiger is the smallest tiger subspecies found in mainland China. Even though there were more than 4,000 individuals estimated in the wild in the 1950’s, the political climate and deforestation lead the tiger to the brink of extinction.

> Smaller stature compared to most tiger subspecies
> Broad black stripes
> Stripes further apart
> Lighter, yellowish coat

Why scientific illustration?

It’s always ideal to observe a living animal in person, but since this tiger is so rare, I had to rely on photos. In order to create a plate that is original, I combined and averaged out the stripe patterns and posture. It was also pointed out to me that this tiger has a bit of a belly–a condition that’s common with captive wildlife.
