Dendrobates tinctorius “azureus”
Watercolor & Pen/Ink
Poison dart frogs contain poison in the skin. Their vibrant colors are warnings to potential predetors. Many poison dart frogs are endangered due to habitat loss and climate change. Notes from Ikumi: “Wet highlight” is a technique many medical illustrators use to give the feeling of lively organs. I was delighted to paint wet highlights on this lovely yet poisonous frog.
Why Scientific Illustration?
Scientific illustration plates are used in many parks, books, and field guides. It is important that illustrators understand the subject matter, so it’s very helpful to make small studies and sketches to study and understand the animal’s posture and behavior.
