2015, Graphite and Watercolor
The sketch is made from direct observation while birding in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
With binoculars and sketchbooks, the artist goes on a hike to sketch birds from life. By going outside, scientific illustrators and nature artists become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about animals and plants in the field.
Keeping a field journal develops deeper understanding of the natural world and reinforces the illustrator’s observation and story-telling skills.
Why Scientific Illustration?
Scientific illustration plates are used in many parks, books, and field guides. It is important that illustrators understand the subject matter, so it’s very helpful to make small studies and sketches to study and understand the birds’ plumage, bill shape and size, and posture.
