Please join Ikumi for first solo art exhibit reception. Over 20 pieces of her work are displayed in the National Wildlife Visitor Center showcasing contemporary scientific illustration.  See for yourself why illustrations can be better than photographs when it comes to relaying a very specific information.

The exhibited works feature original watercolor, carbon dust, and digitally rendered illustrations created by Ikumi Kayama. Each artwork displays a blend of scientific accuracy and artistic techniques. The theme of the show is “Blending of Nature, Science, and Art”, and the illustrations will feature a range of natural science subject matters from avian studies to zoology.

The featured illustration plates include the award-winning “Asymmetric Metamorphosis of Summer Flounder”, “Baltimore Oriole”, and “Barn Owl”.

Patuxent Research Refuge will be hosting the Environmental Film Festival, free to the public on the same date. The Exhibit Reception will be held concurrently, and Ikumi will demonstrate some illustration techniques and share the art materials she uses to create illustrations that are displayed in the exhibit. Selected prints and greeting cards will be available for sale.

Ikumi has degrees in scientific illustration and medical illustration. She works with researchers, surgeons, and educators from all over the world to create illustrations that make modern science accessible and relevant to everyone.
