This scientific illustration describes the habitus dorsal view of a sutrea beetle. The plate was prepared as a taxonomical illustration and highlights characteristics of the species for identification purposes.
Although the entomological specimen are always very carefully mounted on a pin, the specimen do not die in a perfect pose. In order to understand the insect’s anatomy and see how all the parts fit together, I carefully studied the specimen under a specialized microscope called a camera lucida. Once I get an overall idea, I start to illustrate all the parts separately onto a sketch pad. Then I reconstruct the insect in an ideal pose in the final render.
