This medical illustration shows parts of the ribs, intercostal muscles, fat, connective tissue and blood vessels in the chest region. The structures are partially dissected and don’t show the tissue in situ. The view is from an inferior-lateral view; the head will be to the upper right of the illustration.
The main function of the ribs is to provide a bony framework for the thorax. With the diaphragm and the surrounding muscles, the rib cage moves the air in and out of the lungs.
This medical illustration is based from direct observation in autopsy session I attended. Unlike cadavers found in anatomy lab, autopsy offers an opportunity to see “living” tissue that looks and feels alive.
