This scientific illustration describes the relationship between different types of cells found in the liver. The general orientation of the liver cells are also described. Liver cells are also called hepatocytes, and they radiate out from the central vein.
When creating this plate, I had a slide collection of liver cell sections from my master’s thesis. Unfortunately, most of the slides did not show an “ideal” view of the hepatocyte structure. This illustration shows the idealized anatomy of the cellular structures of the liver.
