This scientific diagram describes the instrument design of a quadrupole ion trap that is modified for real time aerosol detection. First, bulk aerosol is introduced through an aerodynamic lens into the heated trapping volume. Then the aerosol voltalizes upon impact with the heated electrode surface. At the same time, hydronium ions are gated into the trap to protonate the analyte molecules. The diagram shows both full view of the instrument and the magnification of the trapping volume.
This illustration shows a concept of a novel instrument geometry and is used as an attention grabber in the table of contents page of the journal. The instrumentation is explained in the text, and this is a visual demonstration.
